This week’s reader photo of an azure kingfisher was captured by Andy Murray.

“This was the first time I got a good look at an azure kingfisher (Alcedo azurea) ,” says Andy. “Most of the time all you see of these tiny birds is a flash of iridescent blue as they fly past and into dense undergrowth.”

“I was on a canoe on the Clarence river in Northern NSW, and the bird allowed me to get very close and take a few photos. It has only been subsequently that I’ve learnt how hard it is to get this close, and how lucky I was that day. Their beautiful plumage and elusive nature make them one of my favourite Australian birds.”
