A pelican cranes his neck, mouth agape, to shoo away a silver gull from taking his post.

The latest Australian Geographic Flickr group photo of the week.

Congratulations to this week’s AG Flickr group member Chris Ison, for his image ‘Pelican’.

This week’s Flickr pic was taken by Chris at the Roslyn Bay Marina, Queensland.

“The fish were biting this particular morning and the Roslyn Bay Marina on the Capricorn Coast was busy with both anglers and birds keen on a seafood breakfast,” Chris says.

“I started photographing this pelican sitting on a mooring post seemingly minding its own business and aloof to the activity around it. Then it stood, tilted its head back, and opened its beak as wide as it could.

“It was only when I looked over my camera and got a wider view of what was going on that I discovered what had provoked that action. A silver gull was swooping down as if to claim the prime piece of real estate currently occupied by the pelican,” he said.
