Catching the sunset before the rains

The latest Australian Geographic Flickr group photo of the week.

Congratulations to this week’s AG Flickr group member David, for his image ‘Shepherds View’

“Shepherds Lookout is an amazing view and very close to the suburb of Holt in Canberra, but look west and overlooks the Murrumbidgee River. I have previously taken some photos but using a 24 – 70mm lens so I was not able to capture all of the river and sunset in one shot so usually took a number of photos and blended them together. I recently purchased a 16 – 35 mm f2.8 and was very keen to try this lens out and on a sunset. Heavy rains were forecast over the next few days so I headed to Shepherds Lookout as it was within easy reach after work and offered a great vantage point,” says David.

“I was very lucky that the sun lit up the slopes of the valley and the colour of the light was a golden yellow. This image was the pick and while I stayed for the sunset it was not as spectacular as the late afternoon. I was able to capture the whole valley in one composition and was very happy with the lens. The large sun star is a feature/characteristic of this lens and really adds to the mood and character of the image.”
