AG Reader Photo of the Week: wandering wombat
24 September 2018
This week’s reader photo of a common wombat in Cradle Mountain National Park, Tasmania, was captured by Steffen Bollmann.
Common wombats (Combats ursinus) are the largest burrowing herbivorous mammal and can grow to weigh about 26kg – and they use this weight to their advantage. When threatened by predators wombats will return to the nearest burrow where it can defend itself by crushing a predator’s head with its rump against the roof or wall of the burrow.
