A 29-year-old man is fighting for his life in Perth after losing his leg in a shark attack on Tuesday afternoon.

A 29-YEAR-OLD man is in a critical condition at Royal Perth Hospital after being attacked by a shark off Falcon Beach in Western Australia yesterday, the Mandurah Mail has reported.

Local surfer Ben Gerring, a fly-in fly-out heavy machinery operator, was in the water with a large group just before 4pm at a popular surf spot called Gearies in Mandurah, about 100km south of Perth, when the incident occurred.

Ben was treated by paramedics on the beach, surrounded by onlookers. A rescue helicopter was called to the scene, but Ben was transported to hospital by ambulance.

The City of Mandurah has closed the beach and authorities are reportedly setting drum lines to catch the shark. The species of the shark has not been confirmed, but is believed to have been a great white shark, at least 3m in length.
