Well worth the money, working dogs are treasured companions and hard-working canines.

A TWO-YEAR-OLD, highly-trained kelpie was sold for $22,000 over the weekend at the Australian Kelpie Muster held in Casterton, Victoria.

The tan-black kelpie, named Glencairn Seven was bred by Christian Peacock of Waterloo Victoria. “He has a big heart and goes all day,” Christian said, also describing Seven as a “strong dog” in the auction catalogue.

Seven smashed the previous record price for a working dog of $14,000 set earlier this year, which the chair of the annual kelpie muster Karen Stephens said is a reflection of a working dogs value.

“They replace an employee basically, they’re a faithful servant and they don’t get superannuation.”

The average price for a working dog at the event was $5,500 and sixty dogs were sold resulting in an overall total of $260,000 made.
