Insects cover the posts of a road and low-lying bridge in Casino, NSW. The bugs were seeking refuge from the deluge of rain after Cyclone Marcia.

Thousands of insects had congregated on the rails of the bridge seeking higher ground from the flood waters. There were spiders varying in size, geckos, grasshoppers, earwigs, cockroaches,beetles, ants, praying mantis and crickets.

After 100mm of rain fell in a short time in Casino, NSW, in the wake of Cyclone Marcia, thousands of insects sought higher ground. “There were spiders varying in size, geckos, grasshoppers, earwigs, cockroaches, all sorts of beetles, ants, praying mantis and crickets everywhere as well as coming up through the cracks of the road from under the bridge and all over my feet,” says Dee Hartin, who took the images.

The images were taken along Renyolds Road just north of Casino on 21 Feburary, 2015 early in the morning. The water was covering the road but it was level with this low lying bridge.

“I captured from the minor flooding at Casino, Northern N.S.W, Australia after receiving 100mm of rain and even more rain north of Casino from tropical cyclone Marcia,” says Dee. “It certainly is a different perspective of the flood situation and an incredible sight.”
